How to clean a spray dryer

Clean spray dryers quickly and effectively with Alfa Laval’s automated tank cleaning devices.

Spray drying is a method of producing a dry powder from a liquid or slurry by rapidly drying with a hot gas. This is the preferred method of drying of many thermally-sensitive materials such as foods and pharmaceuticals. A consistent particle size distribution is a reason for spray drying some industrial products such as catalysts. Air is the heated drying medium; however, if the liquid is a flammable solvent such as ethanol or the product is oxygen-sensitive then nitrogen is used.

The Alfa Laval Toftejorg TZ-67 rotary jet head provides 360 degree indexed impact cleaning over a defined time period.

Spray dryer cleaning requests are very common, and our spray dryer cleaning equipment is ideal for the job. The majority of the residue is at the top where the product has cured or attached itself to the wall of the spray dryer, because the product is sprayed from the top into a big dryer/oven.  What doesn’t fall through ends up on the wall and solidifies or bakes on.  What falls through becomes a powder at the bottom.  The lower levels are just powder residue.

Typically, there will be a hose reel at the top of the enormous structures to clean them, a tank cleaning device is lowered down on a hose to clean it.  Because the tank cleaning device is dynamically balanced, there is no swaying of the flexible hose during operation.

We typically recommend the Alfa Laval TZ 67 tank cleaning device for spray dryer cleaning. The Alfa Laval Toftejorg TZ-67 rotary jet head provides 360 degree indexed impact cleaning over a defined time period. It is automatic and represents a guaranteed means of achieving quality assurance in tank cleaning. The device is suitable for processing, storage and transportation tanks and vessels between 13,000 and 130,000 gallons. Used in breweries, food and dairy processes and many other industries, the Toftejorg TZ-67 is particularly well-suited to portable applications where high impact is required.

For non-hygienic spray dryer cleaning applications, we recommend the Alfa Laval GJ 4. This tank cleaning device offers an exceptionally high cleaning impact up to 100 lbs (45 kg) in tanks with a radius up to 100 ft (60 m). Heavy duty, durable, and reliable, this tank cleaning device is ideal for a high impact clean in very large tanks, such as spray dryers.
